A Holiday Pleasure That Gives Life

We unfortunetely sometimes have to sacrifice pleasure to fulfill some of life’s requirements.

Work requirements and commitments to school studies often take priority and leave us with a mere few hours for our own personal pleasure.

Holidays are a time we can have quilt free time with our loved ones and friends without the pressures of the job or studies.  Enjoying one another’s company is a holiday pleasure that gives life.

We know this is a fact because of how good it makes us feel; the happiness, joy and relaxation we experience. Yet, scientific research actually backs up what we are feeling.

“Scientists are investigating the biological and behavioral factors that account for the health benefits of connecting with others. For example, they’ve found that it helps relieve harmful levels of stress, which can adversely affect coronary arteries, gut function, insulin regulation, and the immune system. Another line of research suggests that caring behaviors trigger the release of stress-reducing hormones.

Research has also identified a range of activities that qualify as social support, from offers of help or advice to expressions of affection. In addition, evidence suggests that the life-enhancing effects of social support extend to giver as well as to receiver.” (1)

In this season we can relax and enjoy the most rewarding pleasures of:

  1. Receiving uninterrupted attention
  2. Sharing Laughter
  3. Playing interactive games
  4. Watching sports
  5. Sharing meals
  6. Giving time and gifts
  7. Listening to our favorite music

We share time with family, friends and coworkers and it is a pleasure that not only is fun and feels good, but also helps us survive and stay alive.

“Research has shown that social connections not only impact your mental health, but your physical health as well. A review of 148 studies (308,849 participants) indicated that the individuals with stronger social relationships had a 50% increased likelihood of survival.” (2)

What a wonderful way to increase our likelihood of survival! It is what preeminent pleasures are all about; enjoying and benefitting.

We connect in spite of COVID 19, whether face to face, online or by phone to express resilience in these challenging times. Pushing past the fears to embrace and share love, manifest courage and keep secure our social connections that bring us pleasure and life.
